Description from the seller

An illuminated Quranic leaf, Safavid Persia, circa C16th. The page contains scripture from Surah al-Hijr (The Stone Valley) v.61-78, recounting the story of Lot and the angels' visit to his people, a narrative of divine warning, moral transgression, and consequential punishment that ranks among the most solemn in the Qur'an.

Surah Al-Hijr was revealed during a period when the Prophet Muhammad was facing intense ridicule and rejection from the disbelievers in Mecca. By recalling historical accounts of past nations—like Lot's people—the Quran offers two primary lessons: it threatens severe consequences for criminals and those who repeatedly mock divine messengers; and it consoles the Prophet (and believers) to remain patient, emphasising that God is fully aware of their hardships and will exact justice at His appointed time.

This is a beautifully illuminated leaf. The script is a crisp nashki in black. The whole script is surrounded by multiple frame lines. Multiple 'circular aya in gold with equidistant blue dots on the circumference mark the verses within the scripture, with red diacritical (devotional markings) providing guidance to the reader. There are four (4) decorative and quite complex marginal medallion marking the 60th and subsequent 5th verses of this chapter. This manuscript is is super condition.
