Rare large stool. - Kuba/Shoowa. - DR Congo

The Shoowa people are part of the larger Kuba group. This stool, of remarkable size, is carved from a single piece of wood. The core is shaped like an hourglass: it has five handles around the rim adorned with geometric motifs similar to those of Shoowa raffia-velvet fabrics. The reddish-brown wood is very dense, which explains the stool’s weight, exceeding ten kilograms. Note small areas of material loss at the bottom of the stool and a slight checking crack on the seat.
