Description from the seller
Ring Larimar / Cabochon / new
Set in 925 sterling silver
Weight: 3.40 g
14.5 mm x 12.6 mm
New and unworn
Ring size:
EU 59 - 60 (sits right between)
UK R - S
US 8.9
Fr 19 - 20
Inner diameter: 18.95 mm
Larimar is a blue-white mottled variety of pectolite, previously found at only two localities: in a transformed ultrabasic volcanic rock on the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic and at “Fittà” near Soave in Italy. Larimar has nothing to do with the blue amber found on Hispaniola as well, which is sometimes processed in the same factories in Puerto Plata and in the same manner as pectolite.
Larimar was only discovered in 1974 (the claim that it was already known to the island’s indigenous people is a legend) and has been commercially used as a gemstone since the early 1980s. Compared with white pectolite, Larimar is harder (up to 6 on the Mohs scale) and occurs exclusively in dense, fine-crystalline aggregates. The sky-blue color is due to trace amounts of vanadium (not copper, as there are proven Cu-free Larimars); in addition there are greenish varieties, whose color is probably due to lattice defects.
Shipping as insured registered mail.
