Italian Neoclassical antique Smoker's Bow Chair dating from 1900–1910, made of walnut wood with textile upholstery in yellow, with carved detailing and solid construction; seat measures 65 × 54 cm and overall height is 78 cm.
Description from the seller
Rare Oak Smoking Chair “Fumeuse” in Walnut – Fine 1800s / Early 1900s – Mythological Intaglio and Original Tapestry.
Splendid and rare example of a smoking chair (historically known as Fumeuse or Smoker's Bow Chair), made from solid walnut wood between the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
The chair stands out for an exceptional piece of artisanal carving on the backrest and for the preservation of its period textile elements. A piece of the highest charm, perfect for collectors, antique lovers, or as an exclusive furnishing element for studies, lounges, or relaxing corners.
Main Features & Artistic Details:
The Backrest: Features a spectacular central intaglio depicting the face of a Faun/Satyr (mythological creature traditionally linked to life’s pleasures, wine, and conviviality), framed by two long crossed pipes, an unmistakable symbol of the chair’s original function.
The Seat and Support: Upholstered with its original small-point tapestry. The seat fabric depicts geometric and floral motifs that recall smoking-related elements (a central vase/ewer and crossed pipes).
The Fringing: The upper headrest/armrest is enriched by a lush original fringe in yellow/ochre passementerie, typical of the eclectic late Victorian style.
The Structure: Front legs expertly turned and a moldings under-rail moved and carved with floral motifs.
• Measurements
Height: 78 cm
Seat: 65 x 54 cm
From floor to seat: 45 cm
Historical Notes and Contemporary Habits
Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, pipe and cigar smoking was a true social male ritual, strictly separated from spaces frequented by ladies to prevent fabrics and clothing from absorbing strong odors.
The “Fumeuse” chair was born precisely in private gentlemen’s clubs, billiard rooms, and smoking rooms of noble and upper-middle-class palaces.
How was it used?
The era’s habit prescribed a wholly particular seating posture, “backward” compared to today:
The gentleman sat facing the backrest (straddling the chair).
The upper part of the backrest, suitably padded, served as a comfortable arm and elbow rest.
The position allowed smoking a pipe in total relaxation. Often, these chairs were placed next to low smoking tables where tabatières, matches, and ashtrays were set.
Condition of the Item
Structure: Solid and stable, the walnut wood shows a beautiful antique patina. Small and normal signs of aging that attest to its authenticity.
Textile/Tapestry: Being the original period upholstery, it shows fascinating historical wear that increases its collectible value (as visible in photos).
Finishes: Original perimeter metal studs and carvings perfectly preserved, with no structural deficiencies.
