Description from the seller
■ Condition: As New
"Kingdom" is one of Ikko Narahara's most celebrated works from the 1950s.
This volume is based on Narahara's 1958 exhibition of the same title, held at Fuji Photo Salon in Ginza. It consists of two series: Garden of Silence, photographed at the Trappist monastery in Tobetsu, Hokkaido, and Within the Walls, set in a women's prison in Wakayama. Together, they quietly observe two worlds separated from ordinary society.
One is a world voluntarily enclosed through prayer; the other is a world enclosed by law. Through these seemingly contrasting places, Narahara explores themes of human solitude, existence, anxiety, and the sense of alienation that underlies modern society.
Widely regarded as one of the landmark works in postwar Japanese photography, this restored edition also includes previously unpublished photographs.
Narahara later reflected on Kingdom with the following words:
"Such walls also existed within everyday life, as an elusive sense of alienation. At that time, I was trying to overcome the anxiety and emptiness within myself by looking closely at the world of Kingdom."
