Description from the seller
Chinese Blue and White Landscape Jar with Original Gilt Rim, Late Qianlong to Early Jiaqing Period (circa 1770–1820)
A fine Chinese blue and white porcelain jar dating from the late Qianlong to early Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (circa 1770–1820).
The jar is of elegant rounded form with a short neck and broad shoulders, beautifully decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a continuous mountainous river landscape. The scene features pavilions, winding pathways, trees, rock formations and distant mountains, all executed with confident brushwork and varying shades of cobalt blue. The artist has skillfully created depth and perspective, capturing the atmosphere of a traditional Chinese literati landscape painting.
A particularly attractive feature of this jar is the original gilt decoration around the mouth rim. The gilding was applied using real gold over the glaze and fired at a lower temperature, a technique frequently employed on higher-quality Qing Dynasty porcelains. Surviving original gilding of this type adds both decorative appeal and historical interest to the piece.
The mountains are rendered with bold cobalt washes, while the architectural elements and trees are delicately outlined, creating a harmonious and balanced composition. The attractive blue tones, refined painting style and surviving gilt rim are characteristic of quality late eighteenth-century Chinese porcelain.
Originally produced with a cover, the jar is now without its lid. Such landscape-decorated jars were popular decorative wares during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods and continue to be appreciated by collectors today.
An authentic and attractive Qing Dynasty porcelain piece, combining underglaze blue decoration with original gilt embellishment, and serving as an excellent study example of late eighteenth-century Chinese blue and white porcelain.
