The electric railcars of the ET25 series (from 1968: series 425 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, from 1970: series 285 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn) are designed as express train sets for local transport.
From 1930 the Deutsche Reichsbahn began the development of electric railcars for fast urban transport. The ET 25 was built for southern German local transport, the ET 31 for fast and express train services. Many of these railcars were damaged during World War II. The young federal railroad system had them back in operation in 1950. From 1963 all existing pre-war series of the ET 25, ET 31/32, ET 55 and ET 65 in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt were fundamentally refurbished and provided with a new, uniform cab shape, the so-called Cannstatt head.
