Balance or scale - Brass - English postal scale

Gorgeous and stylish antique postal scale (letter scale) of English origin, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1900). This classic balance-beam mechanism is entirely made of solid brass and mounted on an elegantly shaped, heavy wooden base with a deep, warm lacquer finish.

The scale is equipped with a rectangular platform for mail pieces and a round dish for the counterweights. In the wooden base there are milled recesses in which the corresponding brass weights can be stored. This lot is supplied including the 5 brass weights shown.

The object is in beautiful, authentic condition with a superb patina on both the wood and the brass, highlighting its historical charm and originality. A gorgeous functional decorative piece for a home office, library, or a collection of antique measuring instruments.
