Pendant “Santiago Apóstol” – Saint Jacques Matamoros – Spain late 19th century
Devotional pendant in golden-toned metal, mounted in an openwork frame of neo-Gothic style
One side features a cruciform symbol associated with a sword, the other a finely engraved bas-relief scene.
Inscription reading (face with cross and sword) “SANTIAGO APOSTOL” (= Saint James the Apostle)
The presence of the sword is typical of Saint James the Greater (Santiago), often depicted either as an apostle or as a warrior.
Identification of the scene (other face)
The scene represents: Saint James Matamoros (Santiago Matamoros)
We see a rider tramping an enemy to the ground — classic iconography of Saint James appearing miraculously during the battles of the Reconquista to aid Christians.
The set is accompanied by its matching chain.
Good overall condition, with light signs of wear.
