Pair of two coconut shell containers titled Contenitori/Flaconi, dating to the late Qing/early 20th century and crafted in China with original official authenticity, provenance from a private collection, each measuring 14 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep thanking their carved, geometric and landscape motifs.
Description from the seller
Pair of Coconut Shell Carved Bottles - China (Qing Dynasty Period) & Folk / Colonial Art - Early 20th Century.
Lot Description (Description)
Fascinating and eclectic pair of globular bottles/containers entirely made from coconut shell carved and hand-engraved, dating to the late 19th / early 20th century. While sharing an extraordinarily harmonious organic form, the two objects testify to two completely different artistic and cultural traditions, making this lot a splendid combination for collectors of Asian, ethnic, or curiosity (Wunderkammer) art.
Chinese Bottle with the "Shou" Character (On the right in the main photo)
Description: Refined example of Chinese artistic craftsmanship from the late Qing Dynasty (early 20th century). The spherical body features a central medallion finely carved with the Shou (寿) character, a traditional symbol of longevity, health, and good fortune. The background is characterized by an exquisitely fine geometric lattice pattern (diapad pattern), framed by Greek-key motifs on the upper collar. Complete with its cylindrical neck and coordinated shell cap.
Measurements: Height 13 cm | Diameter 11 cm
Condition: Excellent overall condition, the engraving sharp and deep, magnificent glossy patina of age.
Bottle with Tropical Landscape - Folk / Colonial Art (On the left in the main photo)
Description: A finely incised container with a linear, descriptive and geometric motif that recalls Sailor's Art (items carved by sailors during long ocean crossings) or early 20th-century export colonial craftsmanship. The iconography shows a suggestive exotic landscape with detailed coconut palm trees and a structure that recalls a hut or indigenous stilt house.
Measurements: Height 12.5 cm | Diameter 10 cm.
Condition: Good overall condition with a splendid patina. A natural vertical crack in the shell is noted, visible in correspondence with the hut drawing. This is a completely typical and common phenomenon for organic materials of the period that have borne the natural movements of wood over the decades.
