Description from the seller
Tabletop Money-Box and Marquetry Case in Frisage Marquetry
Napoleon III Era / End of the 19th Century (Neo-Régence Style)
Accessory: Supplied with its wrought-iron key.
Lot Description:
Elegant and rare small mastery cabinet serving as a tabletop piggy bank, or gaming token box, crafted in precious wood veneers with a four-leaf frisage marquetry pattern (often referred to as “butterfly wings”). The slightly domed lid is centered by a delicate brass rosette cut in a floriform diamond shape.
The interior reveals high-quality workmanship, with a dark wood lining and a neatly cut monetary slot integrated into the upper trim of the lid.
The piece’s major interest lies in its polished brass fittings and its original locking mechanism: a late 19th-century mechanical security lock, stamped with the prestigious official mark “BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.” (Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement, 1844 law), a hallmark of innovation and technical quality for the period.
Technical Sheet:
- Reference Style: Haute Époque / Régence Inspired.
- Era: Second half of the 19th century (circa 1860–1880).
- Materials: Woods of precious species (figured walnut or burl), plates, hinges, and rosettes in polished brass.
- Mechanism: Patented S.G.D.G mechanical security lock, in perfect working order.
- Dimensions: Small table-top format (mastery/cabinetmaking fine).
- Several signs of wear.
