Description from the seller

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.

Very impressive antique Islamic / Ottoman silver ring with a circular carnelian gemstone. The engraving depicts a stylised standing lion or quadruped, turning its head back over its left shoulder with additional punched or stippled dots in the field.

The gemstone is secured in a raised silver setting with a fully closed back construction. Richly engraved and applied foliate and scroll motifs around the bezel, on the shoulders and ring band. Tapering ring band which is finished with a small applied knob in the centre.

-> Animal motifs, including lions and other quadrupeds, appear frequently in Islamic and Near Eastern decorative arts. A lion could symbolise strength, courage, authority, and protection, while the backward-looking pose gives the image a lively and ornamental character.

Outside diameter: ± 28,4 mm maximum
Inside diameter: ± 17 - 24,8 mm
Height bezel: ± 10,1 mm

Condition: Good condition and wearable. The gemstone is well preserved with clear engraving details and minor surface wear consistent with age. The silver setting shows light wear and patina, with no apparent structural damage. Overall condition is good.

Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).

-> Carnelian was highly valued in Islamic and Ottoman jewellery for its warm red colour and its suitability for engraving. It was often used in seal rings, amuletic rings, and personal ornaments.

-> Rings of this type combine practical, decorative, and symbolic elements. The engraved stone could have served as a personal ornament or seal, while the ornate metal setting reflects the rich visual language of Islamic and Ottoman jewellery.
