AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Dutch Art Deco Amsterdam School Chair in Oak and Macassar Ebony, circa 1925

A very attractive Dutch Art Deco chair from the 1920s, attributed to the Amsterdam furniture manufacturer ’t Woonhuys. The chair is made in solid oak, with a beautifully figured Macassar ebony veneered backrest and a newly upholstered seat in a warm yellow-ochre fabric.

The design is simple, strong and pleasingly balanced. The broad upright back, compact proportions and solid oak frame give the chair a calm architectural presence, while the Macassar backrest adds richness and a refined decorative note. The legs have a subtle triangular taper at the base, giving the chair a slightly more modernist character. In this detail there is also an echo of the Hague School, though the overall feeling remains very much Dutch Art Deco with Amsterdam School warmth.

This is a well-made and sturdy piece. It has been lightly restored and professionally reupholstered, while retaining the original seat and springs. The result is a chair that keeps its authentic 1920s character, but is fresh, stable and ready to use.

A wonderful accent chair for an eclectic interior, study, bedroom, hallway or collector’s room. It adds just the right dose of Dutch Art Deco: graphic, warm, compact and elegant without being loud.
To illustrate how the chair could work with other Dutch Art Deco elements as a sidechair, we have added several pictures with a bookcase in the background.

Condition:
Good vintage condition. The chair has been lightly restored and professionally reupholstered with great craftsmanship. The original seat and springs have been retained. The oak frame is sturdy and stable, with small traces of age and use consistent with a chair of this period. The Macassar ebony veneered backrest is beautifully preserved.
