Foo Dogs (傅犬 / 獅子 — Shishi)
Foo dogs are actually not dogs, but stylized lions (shishi or shi). The name "foo" (or "fu") refers to the Chinese word for happiness/well-being (福).
They are also called Chinese Guardian Lions or Imperial Lions.
Origin & history
Originated in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), inspired by Indian lions via the Silk Road
Became popular as guardians of temples, palaces and tombs
Spread to Japan (Komainu), Korea, Tibet and all of Southeast Asia
