Description from the seller

Netherlands, first half of the 20th century.

J.P. Maas & Zonen (attributed to) – The Flight into Egypt – Large gypsum studio high-relief

Important: due to its size, weight and fragility, this work is offered for pickup only. Transport can be arranged by the buyer on their own initiative and at their own expense, possibly via a specialized carrier.

Monumental and expressively executed high-relief depicting The Flight into Egypt, attributed to the Haarlem sculptor’s workshop J.P. Maas & Zonen.

The scene shows Mary with the Christ Child on a donkey, accompanied by Joseph, against a backdrop of palm trees. The deeply worked figures, lively drapery and detailed faces give the tableau a pronounced plastical character.

The relief originates from the former religious art shop J.P. Maas & Zonen at Verwulft 1 in Haarlem, which for generations was operated by the Maas family. It was acquired in 2026 during the building’s clearance. The presence of the work in the historical display window was photographed documented before the clearance.

The rough rear side with wooden reinforcement, jute binding and attachment points suggests that the relief may have served as an atelier or display model. A direct attribution to J.P. Maas or his workshop is not documented.

Dimensions: 67 × 62 cm. Weight: approx. 14.5 kg. Good antique condition with signs of age and use. The donkey’s ear was repaired in the past.

Examine the photos carefully, which are part of the description.
