Antique seal silver ring from Egypt, total weight 5 g, size EU 58 / US 8¼, dating to the 19th–20th century, in fair condition with an insect intaglio seal set in a hand-champed silver ring featuring a twisted rope edge.
Description from the seller
This is a 19th-20th century Central/West Asian style imitation antique silver intaglio seal ring, a typical example of folk amulet jewelry that blends Sasanian seal tradition with Moroccan Berber silverwork.
The core seal stone is set at the top of the ring with a blue-green intaglio glass seal, depicting an insect (scorpion/beetle) using an intaglio carving technique—a highly representative theme in ancient seal culture.
Such insect motifs, in the folklore of Central Asia, West Asia, and North Africa, are imbued with the meaning of warding off evil and providing protection. They are often worn as amulets and also served as wax seals, combining practical and religious functions. The main stone is a square cabochon cut with slight signs of wear on the edges, possessing a rich and warm luster—the typical texture of antique glass.
The ring setting is hand-champed antique silver, exhibiting a naturally oxidized matte patina, typical of Moroccan Berber or Central Asian nomadic silver jewelry style: The ring face features a twisted rope (braided edge) setting, firmly securing the signstone and combining decorative and practical functions; symmetrical scrollwork floral patterns are chiseled on both sides of the band, a classic decorative technique used by local silversmiths; the round stud decorations on the sides of the ring are a signature detail of this type of folk ring, giving the overall design a robust and rugged feel, preserving the rustic texture of handmade silver jewelry.
The ring is in good overall condition, showing signs of age, and is suitable for collection or wearing.
