Description from the seller
Platine Technics SL-1700 Direct Drive + cartridge EPC-205C-IIS — 100% functional — vintage 1976
Technics SL-1700 Turntable XG, semi-automatic direct drive, made in Japan by Matsushita Electric, circa 1976-1978.
The SL-1700 belongs to the legendary family of Technics direct-drive turntables born from the SL-1200: no belt, instant torque, and incredibly stable speed. It features a historic innovation: the AN630, the world’s first direct-drive control integrated circuit, packing the equivalent of 321 components on a single chip. Die-cast aluminum chassis, Floating Double Isolator anti-vibration system, S-shaped tonearm with gimbal suspension and zinc alloy base. Almost 50 years later, these mechanics still run — this one is proof.
OPERATING CONDITION — fully tested, 100% functional:
- Direct-drive motor: instant start, stable 33/45 rpm
- Automatic tonearm return at end of record: functional
- STOP button with tonearm return: perfectly functioning
- Lift, anti-skating, graduated counterweight: functional
- Fine speed adjustments (pitch 33 and 45) with strobe: functional
- Strobe lighting: functional
CARTRIDGE — the true highlight of this unit:
Mounted with an era Technics/National Panasonic EPC-205C-IIS MM cartridge, one of the brand’s most renowned moving-magnet cartridges (titanium cantilever, elliptical stylus). The SL-1700 was originally shipped with a more modest cartridge; its first owner invested in the high-end of the era. A cartridge highly sought after by audiophiles: new JICO SAS (boron, sapphire) styli are still made for this body, allowing it to evolve toward very high-end levels. Straight cantilever, diamond present (see macro photos), sound tested and clean.
COSMETICS:
Very good overall condition for its age, clean plinth, immaculate platter. Original smoked dust cover included, with visible wear marks. Notably: the hinge brackets of the cover are missing — a common, inexpensive part (~€20-€30, common references on SL-1600/1700/1800); the cover simply rests on top in the meantime.
Model SL-1700-XG (export Europe multi-voltage version 110-240V), serial SI 8513 G012, original labels intact (see photos). Original wiring complete: RCA L/R, ground, power.
Dimensions: 453 × 139 × 366 mm — Weight: 8.8 kg
Ultra-secure shipment: platter, counterweight and headshell removed and packed separately, foam padding, reinforced double carton. In-person pickup possible. Insurance included.
Ideal for the audiophile seeking a complete, healthy, unmodified-era Technics, or to discover vinyl on a legendary mechanism that will outlast many modern turntables at the same price.
