Jean Henri, Baron Ecker d’Eckhoff (Hans Heinrich Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen, circa 1750-1790)
German aristocrat, writer and active Freemason in the esoteric and Masonic circles of late 18th century Europe, Jean Henri, Baron Ecker d’Eckhoff belongs to the generation of German authors deeply influenced by French Enlightenment culture. Operating within Central European Masonic and Rosicrucian circles, he was connected to the mystical and initiatic currents that developed around the high grades of Freemasonry in the 1770s–1780s.
He is mainly known for his Masonic and theatrical writings published in French and German, reflecting the intellectual cosmopolitanism of European Freemasonry on the eve of the French Revolution. His principal work: The Prisoner Freemason (The Hague, 1777). A multi-act Masonic drama, this work is one of the few known examples of eighteenth-century theatre explicitly inspired by Freemasonry. The piece develops initiatory, moral, and fraternal themes characteristic of the Masonic sensibility of the era.
Condition: Old traces of light dampness otherwise good conservation. Rare and precious collection. See photos for details.
Specialized in bibliophily and autograph letters, the produced artwork guarantees authenticity and the greatest descriptive rigor for each piece. Whether rare books or manuscripts, each lot benefits from tailor-made protective packaging for perfectly secure shipment.
