Description from the seller
GENERAL
This vehicle is a beautiful and exceptionally original Volvo 740 GL from 1989 with an up-to-date odometer reading of around 52,000 kilometers. In Volvo’s official type designation, the '4' in the 700 series stands for a four-cylinder engine, while in common usage and among enthusiasts’ documentation the designation 745 is specifically used to distinguish the five-door station wagon (the '5' represents the number of doors) from the four-door sedan. This is explicitly stated on the registration certificate. The 700-series station wagons from this period are globally renowned for their legendary reliability, boxy and timeless design by designer Jan Wilsgaard, and the unprecedented cargo space. This particular example was imported in 2025 by the well-known specialist Aaldering/The Gallery from Sweden due to its unique, nearly-new condition. The car was in the hands of an older Swedish man for the first 36 years and then his daughter. Very little was driven at the time, but it always received punctual maintenance. The current owner bought the Volvo in 2025 with an odometer reading of 39,800 kilometers and has since logged more than 12,000 carefree kilometers. The mileage is currently creeping up slowly. The car is being sold now because the owner is reducing his working hours and transitioning to a different lifestyle, thereby shrinking the fleet from three cars and two motorcycles. This is a fair, nearly new classic that is ready for many reliable kilometers.
BODYWORK & PAINT
Externally it is hardly noticeable that this Volvo is almost 37 years old, as both the paint and the bodywork look beautifully original. The body features a narrow red pinstripe that was added at the time by the previous Swedish owner. Because this pinstripe is a sticker, it can be easily and without trace removed if desired. The car is equipped with an original, convenient retractable tow bar from Volvo. At the front, new, original fog lights have been installed as an accessory, and the headlight cleaning system is also present and functions excellently. Both the right and the indicator front units have been replaced with new units. This was done because the orange lens on the right had fallen out, after which the left side was also replaced to avoid any color difference. During a recent inspection at the specialist, the preventive anti-corrosion treatment on the underside of the car was professionally updated, keeping the car optimally protected.
TECHNIK
Under the hood lies the famous and virtually indestructible Volvo 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with a manual transmission. This base model was not equipped from the factory with more complex features such as air conditioning or power windows, which makes the mechanism extremely reliable since these parts simply cannot fail. It does feature a typical Scandinavian engine preheater, consisting of an electric glow element in the engine block that can pre-warm the engine on cold days via an external connection. After the purchase in 2025, the car was technically fully overhauled by Garage Veldbeek in Heerde, a universal company run by former Volvo dealer mechanics with decades of specific experience with the 740 range. During this major service, spark plugs, shock absorbers and bushings were replaced. In addition, a brand-new starter motor was installed as a preventive measure and a special 'Volvo Stay' was installed to subtly improve road grip and stability. The timing belt has previously been replaced three times, each time purely due to the belt’s age and not due to mileage, which speaks to the extremely careful handling by the previous owners. The car is technically fully up-to-date and the tires have ample tread, so the new owner can set off without concerns.
INTERIOR
The interior is in a neat and well-kept condition and exudes the typical, solid atmosphere of the eighties. A known drawback of these models, sagging headlining, has recently been fully resolved by completely renewing the roof lining. The car features well-functioning seat heating and an original Volvo luggage/hundreds- back rest behind the seats, although the inevitable Labrador is of course not included in the sale. The interior has a luxurious additional electrical outlet at the right front seat, intended to power a small electric heater to warm the cabin during entry, although this heater itself is not with the car. For modern comfort the interior has been discreetly upgraded with a new radio that has a classic look but is equipped with modern features such as DAB+ reception and a Bluetooth hands-free function, complete with an installed gooseneck microphone and a specific iPhone holder with charging function.
DOCUMENTS
The maintenance history and the history of this Volvo are almost complete and well documented. There is a substantial stack of original invoices, Swedish documents, and maintenance papers with the car that prove the exceptionally low mileage and careful maintenance over the past decades. A selection of these important documents and invoices is also clearly captured in the attached photo report.
PICKUP
The Volvo is stored and can be collected in Epe, Netherlands after the auction closes. Viewing the car prior to placing a bid or scheduling a test drive is also possible by appointment, so potential buyers can experience the unique condition of this classic in person.
OTHER INFORMATION
The car has always been treated with a lot of love and care by the current owner. To preserve its excellent condition, the Volvo was kept off the road for about two months during winter to avoid exposure to snow, salt, and gritted roads. This unique vehicle offers a rare opportunity for a Volvo enthusiast or collector to obtain an almost-new-condition 700-series station wagon that is ready for immediate daily use or pleasure drives.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
