Bruno Barbey (1941-2020) was a Franco-Swiss photographer born in Morocco and a member of Magnum Photos. A master of color documentary reportage, he documented for more than half a century the political upheavals and cultures of the world, from Vietnam to Poland, with a humanistic and poetic gaze.
Barbey was a pioneer of documentary color photography, exalting the Mediterranean light and the harmonies of Morocco, his homeland. His long-term projects — Iran, Nigeria, Poland, Morocco or China — explore the memory of peoples and social transformations. He frequently collaborated with writers such as J. M. G. Le Clézio or Tahar Ben Jelloun.
