This pair of richly ornamented bronze double candlesticks, dating from ca. 1900, is exquisitely crafted in solid bronze. Exquisitely detailed, each candlestick depicts a medieval watchman wearing a simple hat, a robe, leggings, and knee-high boots. At his waist, he wears a leather belt from which hang a bag of provisions, a gourd, and a garland of game for his hunt.
In each hand, the watchman holds a decorative appliqué, symbolizing the lanterns he would have carried. Each figure, one left-handed and one right-handed, rests on an oval cast bronze base that beautifully showcases the candlesticks. Both are in very good condition, with a great brown patina.
