Black opals, like their differently colored cousins, occur as spherical to nodular masses with no detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only when the stone is cut. A hallmark of this form of opal is its opalescence, which shines with an intense rainbow sheen. The host rock of the opal is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic glow is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
