Description from the seller
Set of Four Dutch Modernist Oak Chairs, 1920s–1930s
A charming and unusually pure set of four compact Dutch chairs in oak, dating from the 1920s to 1930s.
At first sight, the chairs appear contemporary because of their modern design. Only on closer inspection, especially underneath the seats and in the construction, their true age becomes clear. They belong to the world of early Dutch modernism, where ornament was reduced and proportion, structure and material became the main language.
The chairs are modest in size, most probably originally made as a kitchen or small dining table set. Their design is simple but very well balanced: straight backs, square seats, sturdy legs and horizontal stretchers, all giving them a clear architectural rhythm. The warm oak grain adds just enough decoration, without disturbing the sober modernist character.
The seat height is 43 cm, which is the same seat height of Gerrit Rietveld’s Zig Zag chair. These chairs have the same low, grounded practicality, but in a much more domestic and usable form.
They have been lightly restored and refinished. The set is in good vintage condition, with normal signs of age and use, including small marks, repairs, scratches and patina consistent with their period. The chairs are stable and sturdy.
A rare and elegant set for a modernist interior, kitchen, dining corner, gallery space or collector’s home.
