Description from the seller
Chinese Export Silver Cigar Case, Canton (Guangzhou), c. 1890–1920
Exceptional Chinese export silver cigar case, produced in Canton (Guangzhou), one of the most important centers of Chinese goldsmithing for trade with the West during the late Qing Dynasty.
The piece features high-quality hand-engraved work, fully covering both faces with stylized foliate motifs and Victorian-inspired scrolls. On the lid is a circular monogrammed shield, a feature often commissioned by European and American clients.
The interior retains the original retention elastics and displays maker's marks accompanied by British pseudo hallmarks. These marks are highly sought after by collectors of Chinese export silver, freely reproducing the British assay system without corresponding to official UK hallmarks.
The maker's mark "GL" may correspond to one of the several Canton-based silversmiths active at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, a period when numerous workshops produced luxury objects for export.
