- Size: 70 x 70cm.
- Gerhard Richter’s Composition, Abstract Painting (1992) is a powerful example of the artist’s mature abstract language, where colour, surface and movement become the true subject of the work. Built from vertical passages of deep blue, violet, green, black and red, the composition reflects Richter’s celebrated use of layered paint, scraping and blurred chromatic tension. The image seems to shift between structure and accident, depth and surface, creating an abstract space that feels both controlled and unpredictable.
The work reflects Richter’s central position in post-war and contemporary art, between abstraction, photography, memory and the material presence of painting itself. His abstract works enter into dialogue with the legacy of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, recalling artists such as Rothko, Pollock, Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still, while also connecting with European modernism through Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevich and Klee. At the same time, Richter’s cool, analytical approach places him firmly within the contemporary visual world of artists such as Warhol, Basquiat, Hockney, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Banksy and Shepard Fairey.
Today, this image is especially appealing for modern interiors, minimalist spaces, design-led apartments, offices, hotels and sophisticated contemporary décor. Its dark blue and violet palette, crossed by flashes of green, red and luminous white, gives the work a strong architectural presence, ideal for interiors shaped by modernism, industrial style, mid-century design, vintage elegance and current abstract art trends. Intense, refined and unmistakably contemporary, Composition, Abstract Painting is an ideal image for anyone drawn to Gerhard Richter, abstract painting, modern design, chromatic depth and the enduring power of painterly abstraction.
