Description from the seller
Pair of Dutch Art Deco Bookends, The Hague School / Modernist Style, c. 1925
A strong pair of Dutch Art Deco bookends from the 1920s, executed in a sober modernist design language related to the Hague School.
The composition is beautifully simple: rectangular wooden blocks, stepped bases and bold black lacquered round discs. The contrast between the warm brown wood and the dark circular forms gives the set a graphic, architectural quality. Ornament is reduced to rhythm, volume and proportion, very much in the spirit of Dutch interwar modernism.
The black lacquered discs are the defining feature of the design. They give the bookends a strong visual weight and create a striking play between circle and rectangle, dark and warm wood, surface and volume. Compact but expressive, the set is ideal for a row of design books, novels or art publications.
The design sits somewhere between functional object and miniature architectural composition: modest in scale, but with real modernist presence.
In good vintage condition, with smalll traces of age and use. The bookends are sturdy and usable.
