Description:
The Sony CF-950S is a relatively large portable world-band receiver with an built-in cassette recorder.
The hefty device is equipped with protective handles on both sides of the front panel; the unit can be laid on its front for transport without being damaged.
The telescopic antenna is located vertically on the right side of the unit.
The device can be powered from 110/120 or 220/240 volt mains, which is recommended with regard to power consumption. Alternatively, the device can also be powered by four UM-1 batteries.
Just below the band selector knobs, next to the built-in microphone, is the tuning knob for coarse tuning. In the shortwave bands this is used to tune the device directly or, with the crystal calibrator activated, to the calibrator signal maximum at the corresponding 250 kHz marker; in the medium wave and FM bands this knob is used only for tuning.
The fine-tuning knob next to it is used for fine tuning in the shortwave bands: coarse tuning is used to tune to the calibration signal of the nearest 250 kHz marker, fine tuning is used to tune to a frequency +/- 125 kHz above or below the calibration marker with a high accuracy of less than 5 kHz.
The RADIO/LINE IN switch acts as the main power switch; in the ON position the receiver is powered up. The bottom row of controls on the right contains, from left to right, the separate bass and treble controls and the volume control, to the far right the BFO and AFC switches (on VHF) or the attenuator, which is active in the shortwave bands in LOCAL position.
The mono cassette player is located on the left side of the front panel. Under the cassette compartment are the usual play, fast forward and rewind buttons, etc. The main headphone jack is in the bottom left corner. The CREDIT IN switch allows adding commentary (spoken via microphone) to a running recording. The cassette, as was common at the time, is equipped with a mechanical tape counter to locate a specific position on the cassette.
Today, the CF-950S is an interesting, technically somewhat unusual collectible, although apart from the Sony ICF-SW1000T and the Sangean ATS-818CS there are hardly any other shortwave receivers with an integrated cassette recorder.
