The Leopard 1 is a German battle tank – the first one developed in Germany after World War II. In total it was used by 13 states on five continents. Due to persistent combat upgrades, it is still found in some armies in the 21st century. From 1964 to 1984 4700 units were built, of which almost 2000 were for non-German armed forces. In 2003 the Leopard 1 was retired from the Bundeswehr.
