Yurie Nagashima, author and photographer, presents Empty White Room, a 64-page softcover first edition from 1995 published in Japanese and English by Little More in good condition.
Description from the seller
Yurie Nagashima gained national fame in Japan after receiving the second annual Urbanart prize awarded by Parco Gallery in Tokyo in 1993 for a series of photographs featuring herself and her naked family[1].
Nagashima was named to the prize by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of the best-known photographers in Japan.
At the time, Nagashima was still a student at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, from which she graduated in 1995 with a BA in Visual Communication Design[2].
In 1995, Nagashima organized a two-person exhibition with American photographer Catherine Opie at Parco Gallery, Tokyo[2].
Following this encounter with Opie, Nagashima undertook an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts under her mentorship.
Nagashima has published numerous and important photographic monographs dealing with family, sex, identity, and sexuality.
In the West, she is often compared to American photographer Nan Goldin[3].
In some provocative photographs, Nagashima challenges public perceptions of obscenity and censorship in Japan[4].
Nagashima is represented by the gallery SCAI the Bathhouse in Tokyo, where she has held several solo and group exhibitions[2].
Besides her work as a photographer and photography assistant, Nagashima published in 2009 (titled Senaka no kioku, meaning “Memories of the Back”) a series of biographical stories from her childhood[5].
