Two-reel Super 8 film set, model Regular 8, physically good condition with untested functionality, featuring uncut original footage from a 1950s Allgäu Alps alpine expedition on Agfa Safety Film.
Description from the seller
For sale is a fascinating and rare historical Super 8 film set, consisting of two original reels that belong together. It is an authentic, highly interesting documentary about classic alpinism and extreme mountaineering in the Allgäu Alps from the 1950s.
The footage offers a seamless and cinematically well-structured insight into a historic expedition:
Stage 1 (Preparation & Ascent): Footage of the historic mountain village Einödsbach (the southernmost town in Germany) and the local traditional inns. You can see the climbers’ preparations and the departure toward the summits.
Stage 2 (The Alpine Hut): Impressive shots of a large Alpine Club hut (Alpenhütte) from a bird’s-eye view, including architectural interior and exterior shots that document the social life and the rest of the climbers.
Stage 3 (Extreme Mountaineering & Summit Bid): Spectacular and rare action shots of climbers in contemporary gear engaging in dense vertical rope climbing on steep rock faces, traversing snowfields, glacier crevasses, and scree.
Nature footage: Dramatic bad-weather scenes, cloud formations above pine forests, and monumental panoramas of the mountain peaks that lend the film a distinctive artistic touch.
Technical details & condition:
Format: Super 8 (2 reels in the set)
Film material: High-quality Agfa safety film (clearly marked at the film edge with “AGFA”, “SAFETY” and “SICHERHEITSFILM”).
Condition: Visually in very good, age-appropriate condition. The material shows no melt marks or cracks, and the perforation is intact (see detailed macro shots of the film strips). The film material has been stored protected from light and in a dry environment.
Special feature: Uncut, unedited original material with handwritten scene marks along the edge – a true jewel for collectors of alpine history, camera history, and regional cultural history of the Allgäu.
