Description from the seller
For exclusive pair of Venetian figurines “Goldoni” – Murano glass, aventurine and gold – Attribution: Loredano Rosin / Franco Toffolo (1960s/70s).
Exceptional pair of Venetian costume figurines “Goldoni” (Lady and Gentleman), made from authentic, masterful artistic glass on the island of Murano (Italy) in the Mid-Century period (1960s–70s).
The figures depict eighteenth-century Italian aristocrats, inspired by the characters of Carlo Goldoni’s plays and by the classical commedia dell'arte.
Craftsmanship and unique technique:
The sculptures captivate with a rare and extremely labor-intensive decorative technique. The bodies of the figures are molded from dark glass in a deep hue, into which coppery aventurine flakes, shimmering in light, are densely embedded (Italian: avventurina). Details such as ruff collars around the necks, hats, and elegant plinths are finished with colorless artistic glass enriched with 24-karat gold particles.
Attribution and origin:
The style, the precision of forming dynamic folds of garments, and the perfect balance of proportions indicate the work of a distinguished master specialized in figurative sculpture. The pieces show very strong workshop characteristics of the legendary artist Loredano Rosin (famed for his mastery in shaping human silhouettes in glass) or his close contemporary, Franco Toffolo. They are an excellent example of postwar Italian artisanal luxury.
Specification:
* Material: Murano glass, aventurine, 24k gold
