Description from the seller
Bonbons Martougin – Pair of Rare Art Deco Bakelite Bonbonnières by Ebena – Belgium – c. 1920s – In excellent condition – No reserve.
An exceptional pair of original Art Deco bonbonnières produced in Belgium during the 1920s for the renowned chocolate manufacturer Martougin of Antwerp. Manufactured by the celebrated Belgian early-plastics company Ebena, these luxurious presentation boxes are fine examples of early Bakelite craftsmanship and Belgian Art Deco design.
Both boxes feature the iconic geometric sunburst lid design with a raised central medallion bearing the inscription "Bonbons Martougin" surrounding a profile of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. Originally created as premium gift packaging for Martougin's finest chocolates, these decorative containers were intended to be kept and reused long after the chocolates had been enjoyed.
The lot includes two distinct and highly attractive colour variations:
- A rare tortoiseshell-marbled example displaying dramatic mottled shades of amber, chestnut brown and dark chocolate tones.
- A richly marbled oxblood-red example with deep translucent swirls characteristic of premium Ebena production.
The sculptural form, bold geometry and luxurious marbled appearance perfectly reflect the aesthetic ideals of the Art Deco movement. Today these boxes are highly sought after by collectors of Bakelite, early plastics, advertising memorabilia and Belgian design.
Founded in 1907 by Alfred Martougin, the Antwerp-based company became one of Belgium's leading chocolate manufacturers. Their collaboration with Ebena produced some of the most distinctive promotional packaging of the interwar period, now regarded as important examples of early twentieth-century industrial design.
Both pieces remain in remarkably well-preserved condition, retaining their original glossy surfaces, vivid marbling and crisp embossed decoration.
Dimensions (each): 8 x 16 x 16 cm (height × width × depth)
Condition
Both in near mint condition
Beautiful glossy finish
No cracks, chips or repairs observed
Minor age-related wear consistent with careful preservation
An increasingly rare opportunity to acquire two original Martougin promotional bonbonnières in different factory colourways, offering a superb display of Belgian Art Deco Bakelite production.
