Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Large Medieval Crusader period iron cross with long vertical arm and shorter horizontal arm, forged from two pieces of flat iron. At the top, the suspension loop is made from the same strip of iron as the vertical arm, expertly bent over to form the loop. This indicates that the cross was designed to be hung, suspended, or fixed to a larger object.
The arms have a subtly tapering shape, widening towards the terminals and narrowing towards the centre, giving the cross a strong and balanced Medieval form.
The form is simple, austere, and strongly devotional in character. Iron crosses of this type could have been used in a religious, processional, votive, or architectural context. The elongated proportions and plain construction give the object a powerful Medieval appearance.
-> During the Crusader period, cross imagery became especially associated with pilgrimage, holy warfare, vows, and Christian identity. Simple iron crosses could serve as practical religious fittings as well as powerful devotional symbols.
Size: ± 165 x 122 mm
Condition:
Good and stable condition. The overall cross shape remains well preserved, with the suspension loop still intact at the top. Dark patina with iron corrosion and age related signs of wear and pitting consistent with age and use.
The display stand is for photographic purposes only and is not included in the sale.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> The cross was the central symbol of Medieval Christianity and appeared on personal devotional objects, church fittings, processional items, reliquaries, pilgrim equipment, and military or knightly contexts.

-> Iron was widely used for Medieval religious and architectural fittings, but it often survives in a more corroded state than bronze or silver. This makes well-preserved iron devotional objects particularly evocative examples of Medieval material culture.
