Description from the seller
An antique traditional Russian festive icon (Russian: Праздничная икона) from the 19th century (c. 1850) from Central-Southern Russia.
Hand-painted on wood, very masterfully.
With end-face sponki (Russian: торцовые спонки), a very old and elaborate technique.
Dimensions: 35 x 31 cm
In the central panel is the Resurrection of Christ. The central Easter scene is surrounded by 12 individual scenes. These depict the main feasts (Dodekaorton) of the Orthodox liturgical year as well as important moments from the life of Jesus and the Mother of God. The individual border panels are each adorned with the corresponding Church Slavonic titles (inscriptions) naming the depicted feast days and events.
What is especially beautiful about this exemplar is the broad, patterned border (Kowtscheg) that remains; its reddish-blue geometry is typical of the historicist taste in 19th-century Russia.
Origin: Central-Southern Russia. This provenance explains the vivid yet delicate execution. Regions south of Moscow were known in the 19th century for their highly specialized workshops. The middle of the 19th century was a high-phase for so-called festive icons (Prazdniki).
From my private collection, a special piece for collectors
The old icon is in good condition with signs of age.
