The Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. is the fast standard prime lens for the Canon FD mount, introduced in March 1973. It is one of the most iconic Canon standard primes from the FD era, designed for use with cameras such as the Canon F-1, FTb, AE-1 and AE-1 Program. The "S.S.C." marking indicates Canon's Super Spectra Coating, Canon's then-new multi-layer coating technology developed to reduce flare and ghosting and to improve contrast and color reproduction over the earlier single-coated lenses. This is the original Breech-Lock (chrome-ring) version that preceded the later "New FD" bayonet-style of 1979 — the entire lens stays stationary on the camera body while only the silver locking ring rotates to secure it, a system favored by some users for its mechanical solidity.

Specifications: 7 elements in 6 groups, 8-blade aperture, f/1.4 to f/16, closest focus 0.45 m, 55mm filter thread, all-metal construction.

Adapter compatibility: With a Canon FD-to-mirrorless adapter, this lens can be used today on modern mirrorless cameras (Sony E, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Leica L) — as a manual-focus, manual-aperture lens.

Tiny scuffs from normal use. Overall the body presents reasonably well for its age. Please check the photos for details.

Helicoid (focus ring): Operates smoothly.
Aperture blades: Clean and operate properly.
Aperture ring: Clicks properly through the full range.
Breech-Lock ring: Operates properly.


Known Issues
Both the front and rear elements show noticeable haze. This is the primary reason for the Fair grade. In real-world shooting, this produces a softening of the image (a "soft-focus" effect) and reduces contrast, particularly at wider apertures and in backlit situations. Some users may enjoy this character as a stylistic look for portraits or vintage-feel film/video work, but it should be understood that this is an optical defect, not an intended characteristic. Stopping down to f/4 or smaller and shooting in even, frontal light will reduce the visible effect but will not eliminate it. The lens is sold as Fair condition for this reason.
