Description from the seller
A rare Clock Man figure. This one is in an upright pose and is older than most other clock men. It is much heavier (5 kg) than other versions of clock men because it is cast from a single piece of iron in a mold. Other clock men consist of two separate hollow parts. The clock man is in excellent condition and has a beautiful color scheme, and also wears a small clock on the chest and runs perfectly for one day and is wound with a key. The plate on the clock is in good condition and is hand-painted with floral motifs, and a house with a tree. The numeral ring features Roman numerals. On the backside there is also a clock, hand-painted for decoration. The clock man carries two elongated weights. They are certainly decorative and striking and fit in any interior, and are sought-after collectible figurines and clocks, and those who know the value of this quite rare and exquisitely preserved clock man can estimate it, yet I offer him in this special auction with no minimum reserve and anyone can bid. It is carefully packaged and shipped to countries within Europe only, with the exception of England.
The story behind it is this: in the Black Forest, clock men once roamed about (as did farriers). They earned their living by selling and repairing timepieces. However, they disappeared with the rise of clock shops. A small factory (JvE) produced the clock men in the mid-1950s as a remembrance, in various characters, cast figurines with a ONE-day clock on the chest, featuring several hand-painted dials.
