Description from the seller
Rare terrestrial globe by Peter J. Oestergaard, Berlin-Schöneberg, circa 1903.
A highly collectible antique terrestrial globe by the renowned Berlin publisher Peter J. Oestergaard. This model is documented in René Lehmann's reference work "Berliner Globenhersteller 1790–1970", confirming its importance within the history of German globe production and its desirability among collectors.
The globe displays a beautiful original age patina, giving the surface exceptional character and authenticity. The lithographed map remains well preserved, with no visible tears or losses to the paper covering. The globe shows staining, toning and age-related wear consistent with more than a century of careful existence, all contributing to its attractive antique appearance.
The construction consists of 12 lithographed and hand-coloured paper gores applied to a papier-mâché sphere, mounted in its original meridian ring with turned ebonized wooden base. All major components appear original to the period.
Peter J. Oestergaard Verlag operated in Berlin-Schöneberg from 1902 until approximately 1950. Originally established as a bookseller and publisher, Peter J. Oestergaard later collaborated with his brother Paul Oestergaard in founding the Columbus publishing house in 1909, which became internationally known for maps and globes. Among the productions associated with the Oestergaard family, the globes published under the Peter J. Oestergaard name are today among the most sought-after and desirable examples for collectors of historical cartography and scientific instruments.
