Description from the seller

This fascinating icon depicts Saint Nicholas of Myra, one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox tradition, in a half-portrait or bust format. The panel features the typical recessed structure (kovcheg) and is painted according to the canons of traditional Russian iconography. The Saint is portrayed with solemn, severe features, a gray beard and a receding hairline, and a direct gaze directed at the viewer, emphasized by large expressive eyes. He wears episcopal vestments (omophorion), with a richly decorated red tunic and a dark green cloak adorned with gold geometric motifs. The right hand is raised in the traditional blessing gesture, while the left holds the opened Gospel, whose pages display clear inscriptions in Church Slavonic characters (likely passages from the Gospel of John). The icon is enriched by the presence of two secondary figures, situated at the sides of the golden halo: on the left, Jesus Christ with the scroll of the Law, and on the right, the Virgin Mary with the omophorion. These inclusions underscore Saint Nicholas’s role as mediator. Dark background with Cyrillic inscriptions identifying the subject (“Saint Nicholas”). The original borders of the panel show signs of aging, adding character and authenticity to the piece. The tempera-painted surface has suffered some loss of glaze and color in certain areas, but the main figures and salient features remain clearly legible. The icon has not been recently restored, preserving its original historical patina. Quick shipping carried out with appropriate materials to ensure effectiveness.
