Description from the seller
Côte d'Ivoire
Baoulé
Wood, leather, hair
Height: 305mm
Width: 70mm
Depth: 70mm
This carved handle topped with a long mane is a royal fly whisk, a symbol of power and traditional prestige from the Baoulé people, established in the central and eastern regions of Côte d'Ivoire.
Far beyond its obvious utilitarian function of insect evacuation, this object is a highly symbolic ceremonial attribute reserved for the elite.
1. Stylistic characteristics and morphology
Baoulé art expresses itself here through one of its preferred supports: prestige objects decorated with miniature anthropomorphic figures, carved with the same care as the great ritual statues.
The feminine anthropomorphic handle: The single-block wooden handle takes the shape of a woman's body with conical breasts, standing, arms stretched forward with the hands delicately placed on either side of the lower abdomen.
The fineness of adornments and scarifications: The back of the body reveals a great graphic refinement. One notes a sculpted belt in relief imitating the rows of traditional beads at the hips. The face, with almond-shaped eyes half-closed typical of Baoulé, is topped with an elaborately styled coiffure. The file chasse_mouches_baoule-A097-10.jpg highlights the meticulous treatment of this hair, sculpted into a midline crest with plaited motifs of chevron geometric patterns.
The animal mane: The lower part of the wooden handle is covered with a sewn leather sleeve. From this base emerges a long, flowing tuft of animal hair (usually from a horse, cow, or antelope tail) whose texture and color contrast with the brown patina of the wood.
The patina and support: The object presents a smooth, dark, satin patina, evidence of numerous manipulations and the hand’s friction on the wood. It is here stabilized by a modern metal rod and display base.
2. Social and ritual use: A insignia of sovereignty
In court societies of the Akan cultural era, of which the Baoulé are a part, chiefs, notables and kings surround themselves with specific works of art to visually manifest their authority.
The attribute of the chief or spokesperson: The fly whisk is part of the regalia (royal treasures and insignia). During major public receptions, councils, or court rituals, the king or his spokesperson (okyeame) holds this object in hand. Handling it with measured gestures underscores eloquence, nobility, and the authority of the spoken word.
Purification of space: The gesture of sweeping the air with the fly whisk has a spiritual dimension. Symbolically it is to “cleanse” the space of bad vibes, to ward off harmful forces and to purify the air around the sovereign before he speaks or dispenses justice.
A marker of wealth: The presence of a finely sculpted human figure on the handle—rather than a geometrical handle—signals the wealth of the patron, capable of affording the services of a master sculptor to embellish a daily object.
3. Symbolic meaning
In Baoulé statuary and movable art, the representation of a very refined woman (complex hairstyle, scarifications, serenity of features) is not merely aesthetic. It symbolizes social order, the fertility of the lineage, moral elegance, and the prosperity of the kingdom. Integrated into the fly whisk handle, this figure reminds that the authority of the chief rests on respect for tradition, ancestral wisdom, and the spiritual protection of the community. At the very bottom, there is the hook system for the long hairs with a leather surround nailed to the handle.
The fly whisk is delivered on its metal base.
Fast and protected shipping. Packages are sent with a tracking number. Delivery in 1 to 3 days in France by Chronopost, 2 to 5 days across the European Union by Chronopost International. Delivery by Colissimo International to the rest of Europe and worldwide.
