One of the most ambitious prop replica prototype projects undertaken by Icons from 1995 to 2000 was the 1:1 scale replica of the Back to the Future Part II hoverboard.
Icons' Director of Product Development (Rob K.) was one of the most respected archivists and collectors of Back to the Future (and Hollywood memorabilia in general) on the collectors' circuit. The talented and driven Rob K. oversaw the prototyping of many Icons replicas and was responsible for the official liaison between all the studio archivists and Icons. He also oversaw the search for rare research and development documents used in the creation of all the original props and miniatures that Icons reproduced.
One of the most challenging tasks was tracking down the exact shade of pink lenticular graphic material used to create Icons' remarkable prototype replica of the Mattel hoverboard from Back to the Future Part II. Incredible detective work was required, and Rob K. performed admirably, managing to obtain a roll of the pink lenticular material.
