Description
Original astronomical plate by Alain Manesson Mallet, published in Frankfurt in 1719 in the work "Beschreibung des ganzen Welt Kreises." The image depicts the Moon set in a nocturnal landscape, in keeping with the illustrative approach typical of scientific dissemination between the 17th and 18th centuries. The composition combines astronomical observation and landscape representation: the anthropomorphic lunar disk dominates the scene, illuminating a watercourse, some figures in motion, and a natural environment characterized by trees, reliefs, and architectures in the background. The inscription “Fig. 51” placed at the top identifies the plate within the sequence of the work’s illustrations. The depiction reflects the cosmographic tradition of the time, in which the observation of celestial bodies was often accompanied by images designed to render natural phenomena comprehensible and evocative for a broad audience. Created in etching on paper, this antique print constitutes a significant testament to the diffusion of astronomical and cosmographic knowledge in Early 18th-century Europe.
Historical-artistic note
Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706), military engineer, mathematician and French cartographer, was among the most influential science communicators of his era. His geographic and cosmographic works combined informational rigor with illustrative clarity, promoting the dissemination of astronomical knowledge to a non-specialist audience. The German edition published by Johann Adam Jung contributed to the Central European circulation of this scientific and iconographic heritage.
Condition report
Sheet in generally good condition. Paper well preserved with minor and normal signs of aging compatible with the period. Small hole in the upper left corner. The intaglio impression is sharp and legible. verso white. Overall good preservation.
