Description from the seller

The icon of Saint Barbara the Great Martyr is oil on wood.

Saint Barbara (the “Stranger”) lived and died (306) during the time of Emperor Maximian (305–311) in Heliopolis. Her attribute is a chalice with a host floating above it.

She is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is regarded, among other things, as the patron saint of artillerymen, miners, and mathematicians, but also of girls, the dying, and prisoners. Orthodox Christians appeal to her for the gift of "a Christian end to our life".

Wood, oil paint
Good condition; possibly the icon was formerly equipped with a riza
Dating: ~ end of the 19th century

This icon is part of a large, well-kept private collection since the 1980s, with more than 70 pieces from Russia and Greece. All icons have been professionally prepared (cleaned, etc.) and documented in detail.
