Marquetry Objects and Board Games
A superb set of 3 game boxes, accompanied by their accessories. Pieces of character blending the finesse of woodwork with French history.
1- Card Box in Mother-of-Pearl Inlay and Precious Wood
This rectangular box is a remarkable marquetry piece, probably from the Art Deco period or mid-20th century.
• Decoration: The lid features a geometric marquetry of iridescent mother-of-pearl triangles and contrasting wood species.
• Interior: Divided in solid wood (likely mahogany) to hold two decks of cards.
• Included accessories: Two complete 54-card decks from the famous house B.P. Grimaud (Paris), collection "Rois de France".
• Card details: Historical portraits of Marguerite de Valois (Queen of Clubs) and Louis XIV (King of Hearts). The cards are presented in their original cases under cellophane.
2- Dice Box in Thuya Burl and Brass
A square-shaped box with exceptional grain, typical of late 19th-century luxury items.
• Material: Entirely made from thuya burl (or amboyna burl), offering natural speckled patterns with great depth.
• Finish: Hinges and opening tab in gilded brass.
• Included accessories: Pair of green marbled resin dice.
3- Napoleon III Era Work Box
Elegant rectangular box with faceted sides in veneers of precious woods (probably rosewood and satinwood). The lid features a rich marquetry motif of "butterfly wings" within borderlines, centered by a rocaille brass cartouche (no monogram).
Opening is by a push-button mechanism on the front. The interior, stained mahogany, is divided into three compartments. The edges are highlighted by protective metal strips.
Dating: Second half of the 19th century (c. 1870).
Condition:
• Good overall condition of marquetry and varnish.
• Push-button mechanism.
• Tiny veneer lifts and wear consistent with age.
• Overall in good used condition.
Dimensions: 20.5 cm x 13.5 x 5
