Enchanting cameo on a Cassis Madagasirensis shell of the mythological figure Medusa, a depiction almost photographic in its realism, masterfully etched by a skilled engraver of the time in Torre del Greco
Total weight 10.74gr
Cameo measurements 61.50mm x 61mm
Medusa was seduced by Neptune (Poseidon) in a temple of Minerva (Athena) and, to take revenge, Minerva transformed Medusa's beautiful hair into snakes. Because she was mortal and had the ability to turn men to stone, Perseus was sent to cut off her head.
From the beheading of Medusa's head, Pegasus, the winged horse, was born, who carried Perseus home.
