Quran - India, an original Arabic miniature folio leaf dating to 1548, measuring 9.5 cm by 6.5 cm and in good condition.
Description from the seller
A delightful miniature folio from an Indian Quran dated 1548/9, consisting of the section header marking written in red nashki and 12 lines of fluid nashk scripture in black ink. The scripture is from chapter 6, Surah Al-An'am (The Cattle),. v.43-47. The verses transcribed are among the most theologically resonant passages in the Qur'an. They begin with a divine rebuke of those who, in times of suffering, did not humble themselves before God - their hearts having hardened and their deeds made to seem fair by Satan. God then describes how, when punishment came upon earlier peoples, their cries were to no avail and they were plunged into despair. The wrongdoers were plunged into despair - Fa-quti'a dabiru al-qawmi alladhina xalamu - a statement that has resonated through the centuries.
The leaf is amazingly clear given its size. The scripture is written between gold clouds which separate the lines of text and contains simple gold 'aya' in burnished god and red marking the individual verses. An elaborate illuminated decorative marginal Juz accompany the text, and marks the beginning of the new 'ruku' (section).
