Sahara Neolithic extends roughly from 6000 to 2000 BCE.
It corresponds to the period of the “Green Sahara,” when the desert was a savanna inhabited by pastoralist and hunter-gatherer populations.
Several lithic cultures stand out in this region:
Ténéréan culture (Ténéré, Niger): famous for its pedunculated bifacial points and its “Ténéré disks.”
Tilemsian culture (eastern Mali, Mauritania): characterized by Tilemsi points, bifacial armatures with a peduncle exposed by denticulation.
Late Capsian culture (Algeria, Tunisia): production of microliths and geometric points.
Hoggar/Ahaggar industry (southern Algeria): toolmaking in quartz and flint associated with the first herders.
