Amulet of Neith, an Ancient Egyptian faience piece from the Late Period (664–332 BC), depicting the goddess Neith standing on a base with a pierced dorsal pillar, in pale turquoise glaze, measuring 36 x 10 x 16 mm, in Excellent condition with a missing part of the crown, from a private collection in London and acquired from an auction house in 2020, authenticity original.
Description from the seller
Amulet representing the goddess Neith in pale turquoise faience. The goddess is depicted standing on a small base, in a walking stance, arms along the body. She is backed against a dorsal shaft pierced by a suspension hole. Dressed in a long form-fitting robe whose end is highlighted by several horizontal lines at the ankles, she wears the red crown (deshret) of Lower Egypt, of which only a portion is preserved.
The cult of Neith is attested from the early days of pharaonic history, making her one of the major deities of ancient Egypt. Associated with the protection of the deceased in the afterlife, she figures among the four protective goddesses of the canopic vases. Her amulet served to place its wearer under her protection while associating him with her warlike power and divine authority. Her main cult center was at Saïs, in the Nile Delta. At Esna, she was also venerated as the mother of the gods and more particularly as the mother of Sobek. This tradition explains some rarer representations of the goddess nursing two young crocodiles, one at each breast.
