Exquisite bar cabinet in a French bistro style from the 1980s. Made of cherry wood, with a zinc countertop, handrail and details in polished gilt brass, and ornamental doors in smoked glass bearing the inscription “Bistrot de Paris.” We believe it may belong to the collection “The Provincials” by Roche Bobois, one of the most emblematic classic collections in the world of luxury furniture. This collection was born in the 1980s with the aim of reinterpreting the charm of traditional French cabinetry and the classic Provençal aesthetic, offering a rustic yet elegant and timeless style that suited the new homes and country houses of the era.
The Bistro style originated in the small Parisian restaurants, cafés, and taverns at the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century. It is an aesthetic that combines the functionality of a hospitality business with an intimate, bohemian, and welcoming atmosphere. In the original bistros, the counter (le comptoir) was not just a service piece, but the meeting point.
It presents the most characteristic elements of the style. The gilt brass handrail is a classic safety and comfort feature. It allowed customers to rest comfortably while standing and protected the wood structure from daily wear. The engraved letters “Bistrot de Paris” use a typeface that emulates early 20th-century signage. The frosted/glazed glass serves a double function: it elegantly conceals what is stored inside and adds that distinctly Parisian graphic vibe. It was also common to use aged noble woods.
The piece perfectly embodies the essence of the Parisian bistro style, which today is a major trend in interior design for kitchens and dining rooms in homes.
