An Art Nouveau/Jugendstil beechwood armchair produced in Poland by Cosmos for Thonet between 1925 and 1935, designed by Michael Thonet, 80 cm high, 52 cm wide, 57 cm deep, seat diameter about 48 cm, weight 5.5 kg.
Description from the seller
Exceptionally beautiful Thonet armchair (desk chair) on consignment, made by the Polish company Cosmos. Cosmos was a Polish company (around Radomsko). This company produced Thonet chairs on consignment in the 1920s and 1930s. This chair dates from that era, and is thus to be considered a Thonet chair.
After World War II, many nationalized companies in the old Thonet factories in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania continued to produce furniture of bentwood. Cosmos was such a company as well.
The chair is 80 cm high, 52 cm wide (between the armrests), and 57 cm deep (from the backrest to the front). The seat diameter is about 48 cm and the weight is 5.5 kg.
The chair still has a clear Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) design, with the S-shaped bends of the wood (likely beech wood), but you could also call it Art Deco. Very nice too is the seat with the famous peacock print (see photos). This chair was probably produced between 1925 and 1935. The original stamp is still visible on the bottom of the seat surface as well as a part of the original label (see photos).
Michael Thonet is regarded as the first and most important furniture designer. He was also the first to perfect bending wood with steam to the point that it could be applied in industrial furniture production. In this chair, the steam-bent elements are clearly visible as well. This gave this kind of chair its stability. It is remarkable how stable this chair remains despite being around 75 years old!
The chair is still completely original, with all original connecting materials. It seems it has been restored at some point, which has been done very neatly. Here and there are some stains and other signs of use, but all in all the chair still looks very good for a piece of furniture that is about 100 years old. The chair is also remarkably stable, with hardly any movement in the construction. This chair can still last another 100 years! So it is not only a jewel in any interior, but also a comfortable and functional piece of furniture. And it is certainly a conversation piece!!
The chair will be carefully packaged and insured for shipment.
