Fernandina console in walnut veneer, estimated period 1800–1850, in the Antique style with an Imperial substyle.
Description from the seller
Fernandina Console, Walnut veneer, 19th century - Spain
Magnificent Fernandina console from the first half of the 19th century, made in walnut veneer of extraordinary quality. The piece fully reflects the models of the Fernandine period, a moment of transition between late neoclassicism and Romantic currents, characterized by structural solidity and the incorporation of decorative elements with strong sculptural force.
Its design is articulated around a clean-lined top, beneath which there is a concealed drawer in the skirt, decorated on its front with an elegant inlay of veneers forming a double perimeter frame. However, the most distinctive feature of the console lies in its powerful front supports, carved in the shape of a kind of stylized dragons with long curved necks, a motif of great prestige in the decorative repertoire of the Empire and the Fernandine style. Masterful carving. Turned and ebonized feet.
This is a distinguished, elegant, and extremely decorative piece, capable of taking a starring role in both a specialized collection and a high-end interior.
The Fernandine style is a current in Spanish furniture and decorative arts developed during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808 and, above all, 1814–1833), although its influence extended for several more decades. It represents an evolution of the French Empire style adapted to Spanish taste, combining the severity of eighteenth-century neoclassicism with a growing tendency toward romanticism.
In furniture, it is characterized by robust, architectural shapes, enriched with decorative elements of great expressiveness. Columns, pilasters, swans, sphinxes, griffins, lion heads, dolphins, and other figures inspired by Antiquity as well as the Napoleonic repertoire are common. The carving takes on special importance and is often integrated into the furniture’s own structure.
The preferred woods were mahogany, walnut, and other noble species, often with highly polished surfaces that enhance the beauty of the grain. It is also common to see contrasts between light and dark woods, bronze applications, and relatively sober geometric marquetry.
Dimensions: 87 x 120 x 58 cm.
